Lofters concerned about C’down discipline
Camperdown High School Head Coach Donovan Lofters was at a loss to explain the level of indiscipline exhibited by his team during their 1-1 draw with Papine High on Friday.
It was a game that Camperdown expected to win, and after bossing the entire first half and going in 1-0 at half-time, he would have expected it to be a mere formality to see the game out and take all three points at the Alpha Institute.
However, after spurning numerous chances to add to their lead in the second half, they found themselves down to eight players after a fight between players from both sides resulted in the dismissal of five players in the 71st minute.
Papine then made their one-man advantage count, grabbing the equaliser through Jahbarie Goldson, who rescued a point for them in the 85th minute.
Lofter’s struggled to explain what happened with his players during his post-match interview.
“I don’t know where the indiscipline is coming from,” he said. “These guys are disciplined guys, so I don’t know where it’s coming from. I don’t know if it’s the home game and the energy of the crowd and the excitement,” he said.
“As always, you want to win at home, but the gods of football didn’t have it that way today. I don’t know what happened to the discipline,” he continued.
As for the missed chances by one of his best players, that too was a mystery.
“Our talisman Junior Grizzelle got three empty goals and couldn’t score one, and then we ended up fighting, losing three players, finishing the game with eight.”
Lofters suggested that not only his players but he too will need help to recover from the events on Friday.
“It’s a terrible day for me at football,” he said. “Maybe I need some psychiatric training to recover, but losing three players on red cards, I am going to have to go to my bench now and hope they can step up to the plate.”
Compounding Camperdown’s problems is their next fixture against group leaders Mona High, in which they will be forced to rely on a heavily depleted squad, having also lost their Captain Devante McCrea on the opening day of the season to a red card. McCrea will serve the second of a two-game ban tomorrow.
“We have Mona on Tuesday, it’s a hard task,” Lofters said. “But after Mona we have seven more matches – 21 points, that’s what we have to aim for.
“We have to go to Mona and try to even get a draw because we have a depleted team – and then see what we can do from there.”
Lofters promises to find a solution to the problems now plaguing his team as the season progresses.
“The two players who fought are the two quietest players that I have, so I don’t know where it’s coming from, so I have to dig deep and see what’s going on,” he said. “I have to find the solution. I am not a quitter, and I will find the solution.”
